Geographical scale and significance

GOOD operates in the estuary of the Volta River in Ghana. Currently, the field activities are concentrated in the Volta River Oyster Conservation Areas (VROCA) starting 25 km from the Lower Volta Bridge at Sogakope (in the Volta Region) towards communities in the downstream near Ada (in the Greater Accra Region) where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. VROCA is within or close to coastal savanna relics.

The river water is fresh providing relatively suitable habitat for oysters. At the tip of the estuary, blackish water characteristics are observed. Geographically, the Volta River spans six countries in the western coast of Africa, namely Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Cote d’Ivoire. Thus, the river is variably servicing food, energy, water, biocultural, transportation and livelihood needs of nearly 120 million people.
